Edmonds hosts Garden Celebration

  • Tuesday, June 2, 2009 8:47pm

Edmonds in Bloom is celebrating gardening season by encouraging members of the community to participate in its annual competition.

In this year’s Garden Celebration, home gardeners will have the option to enter as either an exhibitor or a competitor. Businesses will not be able to compete but can exhibit their pots and gardens.

Gardens will be judged from July 9 to July 16. Seven winners will then be showcased on the Edmonds in Bloom Garden Tour July 19.

Entry forms are available online or at Garden Gear, the Edmonds Library, the Frances Anderson Center, Bountiful Home and the Log Cabin. The deadline to enter is June 30. Entry forms can be submitted online or mailed to the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., Edmonds, WA 98020.

An awards ceremony is to be held July 30 in the Edmonds Center for the Arts.

Tickets for the Garden Tour are also now available at area garden stores for $15.

Furlough days set for city staff

In order to trim spending and reduce the need for layoffs, Edmonds city staff agreed to take nine non-paid furlough days through the rest of the year.

Union as well as non-represented employees voted to take the unpaid days off after Mayor Gary Haakenson briefed staff on potential cuts and the possibility of layoffs.

In addition to furlough days, staff not represented by a union also have agreed to forgo all merit increases for 2009.

On furlough days, City Hall, the Public Safety Complex, and the Public Works building will be closed. The Frances Anderson Center will remain open regular hours for scheduled classes.

Public safety services require 24-hour staffing, so police and fire staff have agreed to forgo holiday buy-back pay in lieu of furlough.

Furlough days will save the city an estimated $800,000. Eligible staff began taking furlough days in April and will take one per month through the year. The remaining scheduled furlough days are: Friday, June 26; Monday, July 6; Friday, Aug. 21; Friday, Sept. 25; Monday, Oct. 19; Wednesday, Nov. 25; and Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Young artist’s work on display

The Edmonds Arts Commission will display artwork by Dylan O’Neil in the Young Artists Display Case at the Frances Anderson Center starting June 15.

O’Neil, who graduated from King’s High School in 2008, is a self-taught artist whose work is inspired by such illustrators as Maurice Sendak, Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein, and by “stuff that is kind of out there and whimsical.” His artwork varies in theme, but he won’t create anything unless it means something to him. He believes that God has given him a gift and he wants to use that gift to inspire people.

O’Neil’s artwork was featured as the Edmonds Arts Festival Young Artist Poster for 2008. He is the recipient of a 2009 Edmonds Arts Festival Art Scholarship and will attend Pacific Lutheran University in the fall.

The Young Artists Display Case, located next to the elevator, can be viewed 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, from June 15 to Aug. 31.

Group shows how to help seal pups

Edmonds Seal Sitters are inviting other members of the community to a training session on June 6.

The volunteer group assists seal pups and other marine mammals that “haul out” on the Edmonds waterfront. The group also educates the public on what to do when they find a seal on the beach.

The training session will be held Saturday, June 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., Edmonds. For more information, visit www.edmondssealsitters.org or call Susan Morrow at 260-309-1004.
