Edmonds’ waterfront quietly hosted Sea Scouts from all over the West Coast Feb. 15-17.
Every year, the adult leaders of Sea Scouting, a division of Boy Scouts of America, hold leadership training sessions in each of scouting’s four regions. For 2008, the Western Region Sea Badge Seminar was at the Edmonds Yacht Club, hosted by the Mount Baker Council and the Edmonds Sea Scout unit.
The event was organized by Edmonds Skipper and Course Director Jeremy Makin, along with a staff of Sea Scout leaders who are graduates of earlier Sea Badge seminars.
Twenty-six Sea Scout leaders from six Scout Councils across the west gathered for an opportunity to hone their leadership skills and compare notes on how to best bring an effective program to the young men and women who participate in their Sea Scout units on the bays, rivers and lakes.
Participants slept aboard two Puget Sound Sea Scout vessels, the Propeller and the Yankee Clipper, both from Seattle-based Seas Scout units, which were brought to Edmonds for the weekend. Meals were provided in the yacht club by volunteer chefs.

Members of the Iraq Vets Against the War (IVAW) are planning a gathering for 5-7 p.m., Saturday, March 1.
The event is a friendly gathering and fundraiser for the group. There will be food, drink and opportunities to talk with and offer support to veterans of the Iraq War. The meeting will be at 20507 88th Ave. W, in Edmonds.
For three days this March, IVAW will gather in Washington, D.C., to demonstrate against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Edmonds Arts Festival Museum will present paintings by Edmonds artist Jackie VanNoy from March 5-28.
VanNoy’s award winning work has been part of the Edmonds Arts Festival Juried Gallery Exhibits for several years.
This past fall, she participated in the Edmonds Studio Tour. VanNoy’s professional affiliations include Women Painters of Washington, Northwest Watercolor Society, Seattle CoArts and WriteOn Calligraphers.
“If I could capture that voice, that word, that song on canvas, what would it take to give it visual expression? What would that sound look like?” VanNoy said. “I pose the question to myself often.”
The public reception is planned for 6-7 p.m., Thursday, March 20 at the Edmonds Arts Festival Museum in the Frances Anderson Center.
