Edmonds Police Sgt. David Machado and King County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Eric White were placed on paid administrative leave following their involvement an Oct. 18 shooting that left a 27-year-old suspect wounded.

Machado, 39, is a 17-year veteran of the Edmonds Police Department. White, 41, has been with the Sheriff’s Office for the past six years.

The shooting occurred after police followed a man suspected of robbing another at gunpoint in Edmonds all the way to a 7-Eleven parking lot on North 134th Street and Roosevelt Way North in Seattle.

Machado and White each fired their handguns after the suspect backed his vehicle into an Edmonds detective’s vehicle and then drove forward into the store, according to a King County Sheriff’s Office press release.

The suspect was hit at least once and taken to Harborview Medical Center.

“Both deputies fired, but we don’t know which deputy hit the man,” King County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. John Urquhart said. “We won’t know for awhile. It’s part of the investigation.”

The incident began around 5 a.m. at Andy’s Motel on Highway 99 in Edmonds. The suspect left the motel in the victim’s car with a woman. The victim, who was acquainted with the suspect, then called Edmonds Police to report the car stolen.

The woman was arrested when she drove back to the motel at 6 a.m. in the victim’s vehicle. Edmonds Police found illegal narcotics during a search the vehicle, according to the press release.

At 9:30 a.m., Edmonds detectives returned to the motel to interview the victim, but before making contact, they recognized the suspect leaving from an adjacent motel in another car and followed him.

Shoreline police officers joined the pursuit as the man drove south and several attempts to get the man to pull over failed, according to the report. Police vehicles surrounded the suspect’s vehicle at 9:50 a.m. when he pulled into the convenience store parking lot.

Further details of this officer-involved shooting are being investigated by the Seattle Police at the request of Sheriff Sue Rahr and Edmonds Chief Al Compaan.
