EDMONDS – With the New Year comes new leadership for Edmonds City Council.

Councilman Steve Bernheim was nominated by D.J. Wilson, fellow councilman and then-council president, to serve as council president for 2010. Bernheim was unanimously elected at the Jan. 5 meeting.

“I regard it as an organizational position,” Bernheim told the Enterprise. “My job is to set agendas and move meetings along in a well planned and efficient manner.”

Bernheim said he is excited about the year ahead.

“Everyone is committed on the council. I know we will get things done without rudeness. The council is feeling very confident about the year. I’m looking forward to cooperation to achieve things and not wasting time with personal matters,” he said.

Bernheim sees the top agenda items for 2010 being the city’s economic development and environmental sustainability.

“It is paramount we deal with global warming and (energy usage) on a local level,” he said. “We have to slow down the city’s emission of greenhouse gases.”

Councilman Strom Peterson will serve as council president pro tem for 2010.
