There is a new American Senior Legion and Babe Ruth League team rolled in one.

The Edmonds Tigers started up this year with players mostly from Edmonds-Woodway High School.

Pete Bennett, assistant coach and manager of the team, said the Tigers offer players a chance to come and play outside of the high school season. The team is also part of the Babe Ruth League, which is mainly composed of college players.

“The Babe Ruth League is more for experience,” Bennett said. “We’re less competitive than we are against other American Legion teams.”

Head coach Donn Lang said he used to coach a American Senior Legion team called the Extremes that was composed mainly of Meadowdale players, but then decided to create the Tigers.

“We’re trying to take kids from one school and have them play together and help them with high school (ball) until August. Then we play fall ball,” Lang said.

Lang also noted how the high school season is rather short and players need more games to prepare for college baseball. The Tigers have already played about 25 games in both leagues and have about as 25 more remaining.

There are eight other American Senior Legion teams and more than 20 Babe Ruth teams.

Both Bennett and Lang have coached younger teams, including Little League teams.

“The kids are much more mature than before and they really want to take it to the next level,” Lang said.
