Four Enterprise staff members were among the recipients when the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association announced its 2004 Better Newspaper Contest awards Saturday, Sept. 18 in Silverdale.

Former Edmonds editor Bill Sheets, on assignment with The Herald in Everett, received a first-place award in the best editorial category for “Schools are falling victim to political disease.”

The piece targeted lawmakers for attaching two unrelated proposals together, thus making their fate depend on one another rather than being considered on its own merits.

Assistant sports editor Charlie Laughtland and sports editor David Pan swept first and second place in the best sports reporting category.

Laughtland took first for “Young breezes to 3A/2A diving crown,” an account of Shorecrest diver Samantha Young’s runaway victory at last year’s high school state championships.

Pan placed second for “This is as good as it gets,” an in-depth recap of Archbishop Thomas Murphy High School’s run to a second consecutive Class 1A football title.

Laughtland also earned a second-place award in the best sports feature category for “Spreading the word,” a profile of Edmonds resident Mike Rohrbach, the longtime team chaplain for the Seattle Sonics.

Photographer Chris Goodenow received third-place honors in the best sports photography category for “A memorable state meet for Jackson,” a shot of Jackson High School swimmer Andrew Mullins at last year’s state swim meet.
