It’s hard when a school district divests itself of large properties to not make waves of the size that could swamp a few things, including a neighborhood.
So it is appreciated when such moves – as those now being made by the Edmonds School District – are done with care and concern for those who must try to ride those waves.
The current storm is centered over the former Woodway Elementary site. The school building and attendant 11 acres of property haven’t been used as a public school for years. During that period, neighbors, a Montessori school and numerous athletic organizations have made use of the site for their own purposes.
While district officials are rightfully concerned with getting the most for this taxpayer-owned property, they are also mindful of making the best decision for the community as a whole. This week’s discussions with Edmonds city officials to try and meet both objectives are the kind of thoughtful approach that district residents are coming to expect from school officials.
That same approach will be needed in coming moves, such as the Lynnwood High School property sale and subsequent relocation, but the current situation gives reassurance that it and others will be well-handled.
