SHORELINE — The Shoreline School District’s Bond Feasibility Committee recommended to the Shoreline School Board on May 23 that the district seek approval of a facilities and technology bond.

While this does not mean that a bond will definitely appear on a ballot in the near future, it does mean that the school district will further evaluate the needs of the schools and the view of the community.

The diverse 30-member committee of parents, citizens and business, city, service-organization and youth-sports officials took on the task of visiting each site in the district to assess the structures and need for upgrades. After four months of tours and meetings, the committee came to its conclusion that the district should consider placing a bond on the ballot of an upcoming election, perhaps as early as February, 2006.

“In our visits, we observed aging and inadequate facilities that need to be updated,” said Debi Ehrlichman, co-chair of the committee along with Wes Brandon, to the school board. “We believe that technology expands student learning, improves efficiency for students and staff, and prepares students for the future. Therefore, technology should be updated as needed.”

The school district will move ahead and conduct a follow-up community phone survey. The findings from the phone survey will be presented to the board in June.

The last facilities and technology bond approved for Shoreline schools was on the ballot in 1994. Levies and bonds require a passing vote of 60-percent.
