The Edmonds School Board accepted the resignation of District 1 member Doug Fair effective Aug. 9, with plans to appoint an interim member in September and his permanent replacement chosen by voters during the November election.
Fair submitted his resignation in a letter dated July 31, after serving on the board for two years.
He notified the school district of his decision to resign after being appointed as the Edmonds Municipal Court judge by Mayor Gary Haakenson in late July.
The position with the court limits him from holding a non-judicial elected office, he said in his letter.
The interim board member likely will be able to file for the board position during the county’s extended filing period.
When board members resign mid-term, the district has 90 days from the declaration of vacancy to appoint a new member, who will in this case serve until the voters elect a person to complete Fair’s term. Superintendent Nick Brossoit said during the Aug. 9 school board meeting that the board will accept applications and interview candidates by mid-September. The new member, who has to live in District 1, will be in place by September 20.
District 1 represents the southwest portion of the district, including parts of Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace and Woodway.
In his resignation letter, Fair wrote, “I have enjoyed working with board members who are selfless in their mission to improve the district. I regret not having the opportunities to see the seeds we have planted to come into fruition. Likewise, the administration and the staff have been a joy to work with.”
