The Mountlake Terrace Arts Commission presents an exhibit of watercolors by Jim Farrand now through March 28.
Farrand works in watercolors and paints big, bold, colorful shapes that are at times semi-abstract and playful. Now a Seattle-based artist, he grew up surrounded by the rolling foothills of Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley. He studied graphic design and illustration at Seattle Central Community College. He also has a background in music, which explains why Farrand’s paintings reflect the dramatic contrasts and fluid rhythms that have attracted him to so many art forms.
Working primarily in watercolor, Farrand employs techniques such as pouring, spraying, and glazing to create rich dark values while accentuating the pure-white of untouched watercolor paper.
“The intense color saturation of my work often has viewers asking, ‘That’s a watercolor?’” said Farrand. “To which I respond, ‘Exactly!’ It makes me smile every time.”
Farrand’s artwork was selected for the 2009 Edmonds Arts Festival and 2009 Arts of the Terrace juried shows. He is an active member of Seattle Co-Arts. His work is displayed in several private collections.
