An accidental fire caused by a halogen shop light destroyed a Corvette at Seaview Chevrolet, 17909 Highway 99, at about 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16, the Lynnwood Fire Department reported.
The light was being used to dry the newly cleaned upholstery in a 1996 Corvette. Total damage was estimated at $100,000, said fire department spokeswoman Marybeth O’Leary.
Two additional vehicles in the shop area were smoke damaged. Damage to the building was minimal because of a sprinkler system that supressed and contained the fire, she said.
Fire Marshal LeRoy McNulty said that halogen bulbs should be used with caution. A standard 300 watt halogen bulb can reach 970 degrees F. In contrast, an incandescent 75 watt bulb operates at about 260 degrees F.
