A house fire, resulting in a destroyed apartment in Shoreline, occurred Jan. 6 after a small votive candle was left unattended in a bedroom.

No injuries were reported, and damage is estimated at $130,000.

According to fire officials, the apartment where a family of six — two adults and four children— resided was destroyed and three adjacent units were damaged. The family discovered the fire and escaped. The fire began about 6:30 p.m. in the apartment complex, located in the 17500 block of 12th Avenue NE. Shoreline fire crews were first on the scene, where they witnessed flames and smoke emanating from second-story windows of the apartment.

Although the fire was extinguished within minutes, occupants of three other units vacated their apartments. The four units shared a common attic and there was concern about electrical wiring, smoke and water damage.
