The Edmonds Fire Department made 90 responses within and around Edmonds during the week of Feb. 10-16 bringing their total number of calls for the year to 608. The department responded to 13 more calls Feb. 17.

Feb. 17

Medics responded to eight calls during the day, including the treatment of a 3-year-old who fell while running in his home and lost consciousness for a brief moment. He was transported to Stevens Hospital for further evaluation.

Firefighters responded to two calls during the day. The first was in response to a CO detector alarm at a home in the 8400 block of 202nd Street SW. It was determined that the alarm was set off by the homeowner starting his van and letting it run in his driveway for approximately 10 minutes. The exhaust fumes from the van entered the garage and permeated throughout the house, resulting in a high carbon monoxide reading. The house was ventilated and the CO levels dropped to a safe level. The second response by the firefighters was for a chimney fire at 189th Place SW. and 89th Avenue W. An excessive amount of wood in the fireplace caused a fire in the flue. The fire was put out and the homeowner was advised to get the chimney flue cleaned out and checked for cracks before starting another fire.

Feb. 16

Medics responded to 11 calls, which included distressed individuals suffering from such problems as food poisoning, dizziness, hallucinations, abdominal pains and hip pains. All were treated and seven were transported to the Stevens Hospital for further evaluation.

Feb. 15

Medics responded to another 10 calls for a variety of reasons.

Feb. 14

Ten calls were responded to by the medics.

Feb. 13

Firefighters responded to a reported gas leak at the Berglund Orthodontic Clinic. The building was evacuated and an investigation revealed that the odor was attributed to the lab area, but the source was not determined. Puget Sound Energy took over the investigation.

Medics responded to 13 calls, including the treatment of a 9-month-old who suffered stomach aches and respiratory problems after drinking a small amount of shampoo. A call to the poison control assured the child’s mother that there was no need to worry.

Feb. 12

Firefighters responded to a call in the 21100 block of 80th Place W. where a garbage can fire in the driveway of an abandoned house had been reportedly set by two teenage boys. The fire was extinguished and the Edmonds Police Department investigated the incident.

Medics responded to five calls during the day.

Feb. 11

Medics responded to another nine calls, including a two-car accident in the 6500 block of 196th Street SW. The elderly female driver of the car that was hit suffered chest and leg pains and was transported to Harborview Hospital for further evaluation.

Feb. 10

Medics responded to seven calls, which included individuals suffering from such problems as a seizure, general weakness, chest pains and a syncopal episode (losing consciousness). Assistance was also provided for a man who had fallen from his roof while blowing off leaves and an 18- month-old child suffering from a dog bite.
