Firefighters blamed a number of fires in Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and Brier on fireworks during the Independence Day weekend.

In Fire District 1, firefighters battled two small brush fires July 4 off I-5 at 236th Street SW and 244th Street SW, and two others off the 11900 and 15900 blocks of Highway 99. Those may have been caused by fireworks, Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.

In Brier, a wood roof started to catch on fire after a firework landed atop it, but the owners were able to put it out with a garden hose before firefighters arrived, Hynes said.

Lynnwood firefighters responded to several brush fires on July 4. One of the larger ones was sparked behind Meadowdale High School, said Lt. Devon Ogurkow. Other Lynnwood fire calls, suspected to be from fireworks, were a fence fire and a mailbox fire.

“We had some calls that came in as house fires and just ended up to be the fence next to a house or brush next to a house,” Ogurkow said. He added, “It was a good thing that it was a nice day— a lot of people were out with their garden hoses.”

Ogurkow said Lynnwood didn’t have any reports for firework related injuries.

With the warm, dry weather over the past few weeks, firefighters had braced for the worst. “I think we got lucky,” Hynes said, a sentiment Ogurkow agreed with.
