Five wrestlers from Lynnwood and Meadowdale are moving on to this weekend’s regional tournament.

Meadowdale freshman Kai Bruno took second place in the 112-pound division and teammates R.J. Power (189) and Jeremy Harbison (215) each finished fourth in their respective weight classes at last week’s Northwest District 3A tournament.

Squalicum’s Jason Costello handed Bruno his first defeat of the season, pinning him at the 1:41 mark.

“He got pinned in the first round but they did a lot of rolling around,” Meadowdale coach Brian Boardman said. “It was pretty tough.”

Costello finished third in the 103 division at state last year.

Lynnwood’s Kyle Mingo (140) and Tesir Alhussaini (145) each won their consolation finals to finish third overall.

The regional tournament is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 14) at Liberty High School in Renton.

Meadowdale had a much stronger showing as a team at the district tournament compared to a year ago.

“I had a couple of people win some matches I didn’t expect them to,” Boardman said. “Overall, as a team we definitely moved up the point scale compared to year’s past.”

The Mavericks scored 98 points, well ahead of last season’s 42.

“Pretty much this whole team will be back next year,” Boardman said. “They’re just going to get better.”
