The stage of the Edmonds Center for the Arts comes alive Friday, July 27 with the colorful sights and sounds of flamenco artists Maria Bermudez and Sonidos Gitanos (“Gypsy Sounds”).

Bermudez is a native of the original City of Flamenco, Jerez de la Frontera in Spain. The Flamenco troupe Sonidos Gitanos is a collection of seven world-renowned artists, also from Jerez de la Frontera and its surrounding regions.

Bermudez and company perform the Gypsy/Spanish art of Flamenco in its purest form, laced with spontaneity and improvisation. The master musicians and dancers have shared the stage with Flamenco’s most recognized artists, including Paco de Lucia, Tomatito, Joaquin Cortes, Carmen Linares and Manuela Carrasco.

The group has not appeared in the Seattle area since 2003. In this year’s performance, Bermudez brings youth and history to the stage through guest artists Rafael Campallo, an award-winning dancer in his first Northwest appearance and the legendary Nino Jero, a guitarist who exemplifies the traditional style of Jerez de la Frontera.

Oregon-based S61o Flamenco, which produces the show, is the only non-profit organziation in that state which is solely devoted to the public education of, and exposure to, Flamenco music and dance. Founded by Portland-based Flamenco artist Laurena Marrone, the organization also provides local educational experiences and scholarships in Flamenco music and dance technique by both local professors and masters of the art form from across the world.
