Food Drive nets over 3,250 lbs.

Over 3,250 pounds of food were donated to the Edmonds Westgate Chapel Food Bank during the months of March and April.

The Westgate Chapel and Church of God congregations donated over 1,700 pounds of food. Students at the Brighton School donated over 600 pounds. In addition, Char Garrett and Chris McDevitt, Edmonds accountants, collected and donated over 760 pounds. Curves in Edmonds also donated over 50 pounds.

“We are pleased to recognize these local businesses and organizations that have a tradition of caring for our community. Not only will this food help the families that regularly frequent our food bank” but the donations will be incrased by foundation support, said Margaret Smith, director of the food bank.

Every month, the food bank serves roughly 2,700 pounds of food to just under 300 people.

Stevens’ winners win 14 different $1k scholarships

Stevens Hospital’s medical staff announced recently this year’s scholarship recipients selected from high schools in the Edmonds, Everett and Mukilteo School Districts.

Recipients have displayed extraordinary achievement in academics, leadership and community service.

More than 400 medical staff members from Stevens Hospital made contributions to fund a total of fourteen $1,000 scholarships. The following local students will be recognized at the annual Stevens Hospital Medical Staff Hail &Farewell Banquet in May: Nancy Guirguis and Lisa Nguyen, from Edmonds-Woodway; and Alyssa Fairbanks and Kalyn Nilsson, from Meadowdale.

Edmonds Arts Commission hands out $3k

The Edmonds Arts Commission has awarded $3,000 in literary and performing arts scholarships.

Simon Wood, a senior at Meadowdale High School, will receive $1,000 and plans to study music at Indiana University in the fall. Wood plays trombone, and hopes to be an orchestra musician and play jazz on the side.

Jennica Bisbee, a senior at Meadowdale High School, will receive $750. She plans to attend the University of Puget Sound to pursue a master’s degree in music performance and education.

Elizabeth Nestlerode, a 2007 graduate of Edmonds-Woodway will receive a $500 scholarship and Anna Barton, a senior at King’s High School, will receive a $750 Literary Arts scholarship.

Young writers win recognition for work

The Edmonds Arts Commission has announced the winners in its tenth annual Youth Writing Contest. It is open to students who attend a school in the Edmonds School District, or who have an Edmonds address.

Winners were chosen among 49 entries in the themed contest. The theme was “Lost,” which will also be used for the Write on the Sound Writers’ Conference in October.

Winners in the high school fiction category included Madison Brink, junior, Meadowdale High School; Liz Arthur, junior, Meadowdale High School; and Abigale Anderson, senior, Meadowdale High School.

In the high school poetry category, winners were Jennica Bisbee, senior, Meadowdale High School; Meadowdale’s Arthur; and Emily Hie, sophomore, Edmonds-Woodway.

Middle school winners included Amanda Halverson, Lucy Tibbits and Jasla James.

Salmon chapter hosts speaker at meeting

The Edmonds Laebugten Salmon Chapter will have a guest speaker at its 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 28 meeting at the Senior Center.

Anton Jones, the owner/operator of Darrell &Dad’s Family Guide Service on Lake Chelan, will talk about his business and fishing.

The meeting is open to the public. Food and refreshments will be available. Prize raffle and fishing reports scheduled.

Community Blood Drive set for June 2

Puget Sound Blood Center will be holding a blood drive from 1-7 p.m., Monday, June 2 at the Faith Community Church at 10220 238th St. SW in Edmonds.
