Help make D.J. Wilson of Edmonds Community College, a happier political science instructor. How? By attending the new series of international films that will be shown every Tuesday during the month of Feb. at the college.
The idea for this mini festival was born over a cup of coffee between Wilson and fellow Johns Hopkins alum Dr. Steve Hanson, who is now the head of the REECAS (Russia, East Europe, Central Asia) outreach program at the University of Washington. REECAS is funding this film program as part of its mandate to sponsor activities that encourage learning about the culture, history and politics of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
“We’re starting small, with only four films, but if the people in this area demonstrate an interest, we’d like to return with an expanded program next year,” said Wilson who hopes that the Edmonds community will respond positively to their efforts to provide a rather rare wintertime arts event.
Each film deals with how people cope with life in the middle of war and will be accompanied by a short talk given by an appropriate academic expert, to help put the film into a realistic context for the audience. Given President Bush’s State of the Union address earlier this week, we may want to attend these films just to get some pointers!
The films run 6 p.m. Tuesdays in February in Mountlake Terrace Hall, Room 111 at Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood. Admission is free.
