Freshman Laurin Williams broke the school record in the 500-yard freestyle to help lead the Thunderbirds to a third-place finish out of 12 teams at the 4A District 1 meet at Marysville-Pilchuck Nov. 4.
“Third is great. We could have been third to fifth in my opinion,” Shorewood coach Susie McDowell said. “We had some really good swims.”
Four Shorewood swimmers have qualified for the state Class 4A meet that began with diving preliminaries Nov. 9. Swim preliminaries begin at 11:15 a.m. today (Friday, Nov. 10), and the swimming and diving finals begin at 11 a.m. Nov. 11.
Williams finished third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 13.05 seconds to break Leanne Dull’s record by four seconds. She is seeded seventh in the event at state.
Williams also placed third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.86 and is seeded 15th.
Sophomore Tara McIntyre swam to a pair of third-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (25.77) and 100 freestyle (55.68). She is seeded 16th in the 50 freestyle and ninth in the 100 freestyle.
Senior Jenny McCall made it to state as a wild card in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Her time of 25.99 in the 50 freestyle has her seeded 19th and her time of 56.64 in the 100 freestyle is good for the 17th seed.
Junior Julia Gentling qualified as a wild card in the 100 backstroke and is the 19th seed (1:03.53).
The T-birds’ 400 freestyle relay of McCall, Gentling, Williams and McIntyre had already qualified for state and is seeded 18th (3:50.82).
Senior diver Elle MacGeorge, who had already qualified for state, finished third with 306.9 points. Junior Crystal Bugai made it state in her first year of diving as a wild card with a score of 296.
