Shorecrest’s boys tennis team lost 12 seniors off last year’s squad but looks to win the 3A District title once again and make a good showing at state.

Senior Jason Hollenbach-Landraitus tops the singles ladder. He finished third at districts in singles last year.

“I’m trying to go to state as a No. 1 seed,” Hollenbach-Landraitus said.

Shorewood handed Shorecrest its first loss of the season 6-1, Sept. 17. Hollenbach-Landraitus lost in straight sets to Shorewood’s Tristan Reni, but playing tough competition in the league is what he wants.

As a 3A team in the 4A-dominated Western Conference South Division, the competition is good preparation for the postseason, Hollenbach-Landraitus said.

“It really gets us ready,” he said. “I think that really gets us an advantage.”

Hollenbach-Landraitus said he’s personally worked hard on his forehand and serve. As a team, the Scots have proven that they can win close matches, winning seven of the first eight three-set matches they played this season.

The Scots beat Edmonds-Woodway 5-2 already, which is usually one of the best 4A teams in the league.

“It was real close,” said Shorecrest coach Barry Majorowicz. “The score was not indicative of what took place. It easily could have been the other way around.”

Shorecrest had 56 athletes turn out for tennis this year in the no-cut sport. Twenty players are on varsity with four players from last year’s varsity top ten back.

Majorowicz said his team is cohesive this year.

“They’ve been together and we’ve been working as a group for four years,” he said. “They know what I expect and they know what they expect.”

The rest of the singles lineup consists of senior Nathan Bright at No. 2 singles, senior Mike Uppinghouse at No. 3 singles and junior Keith Adams at No. 4 singles.

Juniors Devin Abney and Max Reikosky play No .1 doubles, while senior Nathan Mass and junior Danny Brzovic play No. 2 doubles and senior James Robinson and junior Dan Shively round out the lineup at No. 3 doubles.
