Fire District 1, Lynnwood and Edmonds fire fighters responded to a fire at a two-story duplex, located in the 5200 block of 149th Street SE, in the early morning hours of June 30. No one was seriously injured.

A discarded cigarette apparently started the blaze, according to investigator Ed Hardesty of the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s office. The fire started on a second-floor balcony and spread to the attic.

A neighbor called 911 at about 3:45 a.m. and reported seeing flames from the deck of the two-story, fourplex, according to Leslie Hynes, Fire District 1 spokeswoman. At the same time, smoke alarms sounded in two of the units.

Fire officials estimate the structure suffered about $100,000 in damage. Two of the four units are uninhabitable and three men were displaced. Two men intend to move into a nearby fourplex and the third man is receiving assistance from Support 7 and Red Cross.
