EDMONDS – Ferries stopped serving the Edmonds ferry terminal for more than four hours July 2 after operators noticed a bridge cable was frayed and quickly getting worse.

“The crew noticed it, reported it immediately, and we needed to get it repaired immediately,” said Susan Harris, Washington State Ferries spokeswoman.

The terminal was closed after the 9:20 a.m. sailing left Edmonds, and was reopened at 1:30 p.m., Harris said.

The problem was a bad cable, which was replaced with a new one, Harris said.

The delay likely affected close to 1,000 or more passengers on the Edmonds-Kingston route, Harris said. Four round trips were canceled.

“It’s one of the biggest car routes we have,” Harris said.

Passengers looking to sail from Edmonds were rerouted to the Seattle ferry terminal, Harris said. There was no significant delay there as a result.

On Bainbridge Island, Kingston passengers were directed south to the Bainbridge Island terminal, where there was a one-hour backup of cars waiting in line.
