Twice a year, the Friends of the Mill Creek Library hold a used book sale outside the library, and the next one is coming up this weekend.

Residents donate thousands of books for these sales and for an ongoing sale inside the library. There are paperbacks and hardcover books, fiction and non-fiction, cookbooks, mysteries, thrillers, children’s books, audio books, books on art and photography, as well as some periodicals. Many donations are almost new.

The book sale is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 8 at the Mill Creek Library, 15429 Bothell-Everett Highway.

Most paperbacks are sold for 50 cents, hardcovers for $1. During the last hour of the sale, bargain bags of books are sold at discounts, but selections are limited. Cookies and coffee are donated by local businesses. Bags for carrying purchases are recycled. Leftovers from the sales are donated to other libraries.

All sales proceeds go to fund library summer reading programs for children, books for discussion groups, toddler and preschool story times, programs for all ages, library furnishings and services which would not be possible within the regular budget.

Recent purchases for the library include slat display walls and shelves for publications near the entrance. One of the most successful programs presented by the Friends was held last fall, a panel of speakers with various viewpoints on the USA Patriot Act.

The Friends of the Mill Creek Library is a non-profit organization whose members attend monthly meetings; maintain the library copy machine; and collect, sort, shelve, store, and sell donated used books. Membership is $10 per year. Application forms are available at the library.
