Get out the leather and lipstick for ‘Rocky Horror’

Get ready to do the time warp as Edmonds Community College Drama presents its last show of the season, Richard O’Brien’s “The Rocky Horror Show.” The production is the stage version of the popular science-fiction/horror movie parody that keeps all the camp.

Traditionally, the drama and music departments at EdCC collaborate every other year to put on a musical, says Joanna Goff, director and drama department chair. This is the first musical to be performed at the college’s own Black Box Theatre.

Why cap the season with this flamboyant cult classic? “It had to fit in the Black Box setting,” Goff says. “The setting is intimate and immediate, so (the show) needs to be smaller but pack a real punch.”

And Goff and her cast have every intention of delivering such a punch. The show will closely follow the script of the original play, which premiered in London in 1974 and has since been an audience favorite in both its theater and film adaptations. The EdCC version will include all the extravagant costumes and big musical numbers, and plenty of audience interaction.

“People are really excited,” says Goff, adding she’s talked to people who plan to attend multiple showings, some in costume.

“The Rocky Horror Show” is a bit of a departure from the season’s other two productions: the screwball comedy “The Man who Came to Dinner” and the poignant journalistic exposé “Nickled and Dimed.”

“It’s a burlesque spoof,” says Goff, who has directed all the EdCC shows this season. “It makes fun of all things in power — things that need to be given a second look.”

“The Rocky Horror Show” runs 7:30 p.m. May 13-15 and 20-22 with a matinee at 2 p.m. May 16 and a sign interpreted performance at 7:30 p.m. May 20 at the Black Box Theatre in Mukilteo Hall, Edmonds Community College.

Some of the content in the play may not be suitable for children under 13. Goff encouraged those unfamiliar with the material to call her for more information at 425-640-1046.
