Perhaps Girasol, the unassuming Mexican Restaurant in Edmonds, was named sunflower because the yellow flower is beautiful and bright.
Or, maybe it was just a whim.
Either way, my sister and I had quite an enjoyable dinner at the “sunflower,” and the food really did brighten our evening.
Our days of dining together are numbered, as my sister’s summer vacation is nearing an end. That in and of itself was a good enough reason for us to prepare to eat a big Mexican meal, as we agreed that when we are apart we tend to not eat well. This is due to her constant studying while at law school and my refusal to cook real meals for myself when I can easily eat a can of soup.
The nice thing about dining with my sister is that we somehow have very similar taste in food. Pure coincidence.
Our menu for the evening, we decided, was a Mexican pizza, and a main course of cheese enchiladas and a chicken tostada. Nothing extremely out of the ordinary, which was fine with us.
The waiter, Manuel, was extremely nice, and even performed a bit of a talent show when he flipped our bowl of guacamole in his hand and it landed upright. I am not sure how he came to know such a trick, but we were impressed and gave him an ovation.
Needless to say, our server was friendly and quick, which is always a plus when food is on the mind.
The Mexican pizza arrived first and was very tasty, as is anything comprised of cheese, chicken, tomatoes, onions, guacamole and sour cream all residing on a fried flour tortilla.
The enchiladas and tostada were also very good, and everything was fresh. The restaurant was extremely clean, and I even saw someone in the kitchen scrubbing the walls for proof.
My sister and I had initially planned on ordering dessert when our stomachs were still empty, but when the time came to decide on something sweet, we had to defer due to our lack of room.
Had we ordered dessert, our choice would have been the sopadillas, deep fried crispy flour tortilla chips topped with honey and cinnamon, whipped cream and strawberry sauce.
Although the real cost of the meal with my sister was priceless, we did receive a check for $22.58. Not bad.
And since we told Manual that we would be back, my guess is that we will visit Girasol sometime again in the near future.
