Give a brake to those who build roads

On May 13, at 10:40 in the morning, a driver in the 14500 block of the Bothell-Everett Highway ignored a stop sign put up by a construction flagger for the Washington State Department of Transportation. The driver also used profanity when asked to stop for construction workers.

Stories like that may appear more frequently in the Mill Creek police log this summer, since the season for road work — summer — is about to begin.

Everyone who lives in or drives through Mill Creek has had to deal with construction on the Bothell-Everett Highway for more than a year now, part of an ongoing state effort to widen the road to handle increased traffic. More work will take place this summer in Mill Creek, but Bothell-Everett Highway work will shift to north of Mill Creek.

In town, the city has its own projects, including street re-paving.

With all this work going on, the accompanying traffic delays, and the usual congestion, people’s tempers, like the driver mentioned above, can be on edge.

However, there is no excuse for behavior that can injure or kill a construction worker who is trying to do his or her job.

With work on roads this summer, use some common sense. If you’re taking a trip through a construction zone, leave a few minutes earlier.

Save yourself — and construction crews — trouble and be courteous on the roads.
