The Edmonds Arts Commission is presenting an exhibit of hand blown glass by Sonja Blomdahl in the EAC display case at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., through Jan. 30.

Blomdahl is a widely collected glass artist whose work is known for its fluid form and brilliant, pure color. “Color is a form of joy that I infuse into my artworks,” Blomdahl said. “I want colors to glow and react with each another as they animate the forms.”

With an Italian technique called incalmo, which literally means “with calm,” she often joins two glass bubbles together creating a band between them which acts as an optic lens, moving the colors around, blending them and drawing the viewer deeper inside the form. Through these vessels, she explores ideas of formal balance and the many possibilities of color harmonies to stimulate a range of human sensations.

Blomdahl was selected in September to create glass chandeliers for the stairwells in the newly renovated Edmonds Center for the Arts. Each chandelier is made up of three elongated vessel forms with no two vessels colored alike. They hang from a black metal ring and provide a stunning contrast to the orange ceilings.
