As the Western Conference’s only Class 4A gymnastics team, Shorewood receives an automatic berth to next weekend’s regional meet.

Shorecrest gymnasts were not so fortunate. The Scots had to compete for their spots at a qualifier meet Jan. 30 at Shorewood High School.

Sehome claimed the one 3A team berth on the line, but four Scots snagged regional berths in all four events.

Junior Kristina Bendiksen earned the only all-around berth with a career-high score of 34.8 points. Bendiksen placed first in floor (9.2) and beam (9.0).

Shorecrest’s Camille Charlier, Sarah Nguyen and Emily Anderson each finished in the top four in every event and will join Bendiksen at regionals.

“We have a really young team,” Shorecrest coach Bonnie Carr said. “It’s kind of been a rebuilding year. The girls have gotten better by leaps and bounds.”

Shorewood also participated in the five-team meet and registered the highest team score. The Thunderbirds compiled 163.95 points to finish ahead of Sehome (153.05) and Shorecrest (144.55).

Alie Hofmann won the vault (8.85), took second in beam (8.7) and edged teammate Elle MacGeorge for second in the all-around scoring with 33.95 points.

MacGeorge took first in bars (8.6), third in beam (8.6) and third in the all-around standings at 33.8.

Shorewood’s Rachel Silverstein finished second in floor (8.9) and Lauren Piastuch tied for third in vault (8.5).

“The girls are getting more comfortable with their routines,” Shorewood coach Susan Riley said. “All the big stuff is in there. We’re just polishing what we have.”

Regionals are scheduled for Feb. 14 at Sammamish High School.
