EDMONDS — In a time when businesses are challenged by a sluggish economy, Harbor Square Athletic Club is making moves to expand – in both size and offerings. The company is so bullish that it has recently completed a $2 million renovation.
That move has added 3,500 square feet, most of which houses an aerobic studio on the first floor and a new cardio space on the second floor.
With the cardio area being the most popular spot for members, according to Greg Boland, marketing director, making the commitment was logical. “The upgrade gives us the nicest views around,” he added.
Most of the 60 fitness machines in the new area have individually controlled television, radio and video games. All have views overlooking Puget Sound.
The aerobic studio has a floating floor, giving a cushioned surface, and has an independent heating system enabling the club to offer hot yoga.
Adding square footage gives Harbor Square the ability to expand its personal services to add foot care and massage to manicure, pedicure and facial services.
An elevator and personal training space also have been added. The men’s locker room was remodeled with upgraded finishes. Thirty parking spaces were added and office space was expanded.
Because of the age of the building, the project also included some maintenance work, according to owner Jack Tawney. The exterior received a face-lift.
Harbor Square serves about 6,000 members, gaining 1,000 members over the past year. Retention of members is around 85 percent. Tawney pointed out at a recent Port Commission meeting that 70 percent is a very good industry standard for health clubs.
Between 1,000 and 1,500 people visit the club each day. About 80 percent come from the Edmonds area, according to Tawney.
Harbor Square Athletic Club opened in 1985. Membership fees range from $49 to $123 per month.
