Mountlake Terrace’s Rhett Bouche made school history with a pair of fourth-place finishes at the Western Conference South Division and District 1 tennis tournaments.

Bouche is the first singles player from Mountlake Terrace High School to have ever advanced to the district and state tournaments.

The Mountlake Terrace junior took fourth place at the district tournament, which means that he is the alternate to state.

“I felt I played really well,” Bouche said. “I made few mistakes and that allowed me to do well.”

Bouche (12-10 overall) lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to Snohomish’s Chad Merkley in a first-round match but then rebounded with a pair of victories. He beat Cascade’s Matt Nguyen 6-3, 6-2 and then upended Kamiak’s Abraham Ahn 6-2, 6-1 in what was the key match of the tournament.

During the regular season Bouche defeated Ahn but the Kamiak standout won their second meeting 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) in the third-fourth place match at the Wesco South Division tournament.

Bouche’s victory over Ahn at districts sent him into the third-fourth place match where Bouche lost 6-4, 6-2 to Jackson’s Alex Lin.

Bouche, who started playing tennis when he was a freshman, wasn’t sure what was going to happen at the district tournament.

“Going into it, I didn’t think I’d have a good chance,” he said. “I got a good draw. I never knew that I was going to be that successful. I was really happy with my results.”
