The Mountlake Terrace girls soccer team returns a wealth of experience.
Nine returning seniors are back from last year’s playoff team, but one notable exception is first-team, all-league goalkeeper Miranda Hanson, who graduated.
Mountlake Terrace head coach Jerry Myers plans to platoon seniors Kayla Medlock and Caitlin Hovick in goal for the foreseeable future.
Hovick played on the junior varsity team last season, while Medlock was Hanson’s backup.
The two goalkeepers are about equal in skill level, according to Myers.
“We have a lot of experience but losing Miranda Hanson, it’s going to be tough,” Myers said.
Up front, the Hawks are led by second-team, all-league forward Laurelle LaCasse, who unfortunately was injured in Mountlake Terrace’s 4-3 season-opening loss to district rival Lynnwood last week. LaCasse hoped to only miss one game, Myers said.
Honorable mention defender Kelsie Raunio and senior Emma Fritz give the Hawks a solid defensive unit. Junior Becky Bradlee, another honorable mention, all-leaguer, is a strong presence in the midfield.
“Our strength is our experience and our passing game,” Myers said. “If we can settle the ball down and keep it on the ground and our short passing game, we have a good chance.”
As it was last season, the Western Conference South Division boasts some of the top teams in the area.
“The league’s tough,” Myers said. “You can’t take anybody lightly.”
