The Mountlake Terrace volleyball team returns a solid core of players but is looking for a freshman setter to lead the way.

Justine Kelly may be young, but she brings plenty of club experience to the Hawks.

“She’s very mature for her age volleyball-wise,” said Hawks coach Marietta Snyder. “She has a great personality. She is kind of a quiet leader. She still knows what to do on the court. I’m excited for her. She’s definitely willing to work hard.”

Returning from last season are Cristine Lotz, Stephanie McGrath, Shawna Pung, Leah Lechtenberg and Liana Samuelson.

“They’ve been on varsity for a couple of years,” Snyder said. “They’re excited about this season.”

As has been the case for previous years, Mountlake Terrace doesn’t have much size.

“We’re going to have to rely on defense to get us through,” Snyder said. “We’re going to try and pick up on our defense to make sure we’re able to stay in there and be able to compete.”

Snyder is pleased with the play of new libero Soleil Boileau, who previously was an outside hitter.

Offensively, Lotz and Lechtenberg bring plenty of firepower from the outside, Snyder said.

The Hawks had a productive summer and come into the fall ready to go.

“The serving is strong. The defense is pretty strong,” Snyder said. “We’re actually looking pretty crisp. That’s not to say we can’t get better. I’m pretty impressed with the way we go after that ball and keep it in play.

“This team is pretty aggressive. They’re not willing to fold. We have a great group of athletes.”
