Celebrate spring with Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale “The Ugly Duckling,” brought to life by the Shorecrest High School drama department as the musical “HONK!” The production opens Friday, May 14 for seven performances at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center.

Created by the acclaimed British composer/lyricist team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, “HONK!” received the Laurence Olivier Award (the British equivalent to the Tony Award) in 2000, for “Best New Musical.” The production is highlighted by songs encompassing Broadway to the blues and a barnyard full of colorful animals who wear human clothing. Emphasizing the theme that being unique is important and something to celebrate, the production is geared for both adults and children ages 5 and up.

Shorecrest’s award-winning drama department earned several awards last spring at the 5th Avenue Theatre High School Musical Awards, including Best Overall Musical for “Oliver!”; Best Director, Brad Reed; and Best Actor, Brian Earp, who portrays the lead character Ugly in “HONK!”

Performances dates and times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays, May 14 and 21, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, May 15 and 22, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center, located on the campus of Shorecrest High School at 15343 25th Ave. NE, Shoreline.
