Honoring veterans a worthwhile cause

I was happy to see the article on the grass roots efforts led by Chuck Wright and Fred Fillbrook to recognize veterans in Mill Creek. (“Local veterans push for memorial, parade,” March 21) Veterans deserve our appreciation and should never be forgotten.

In the event that a parade cannot be organized before November, I would like to suggest that at the very least perhaps a ceremony of some sort can be held either at City Hall or at a local park. A tent could be set up with front row seats for the veterans. A military band and color guard could be present with flags of the five branches of service, and the public invited. This would seem doable by November, and given our local weather at that time of year, may even be preferred to a parade.

I would be in favor of naming a future park in honor of our veterans, but believe any monuments should be modest. I think money would be better spent sent to organizations that assist veterans who have been injured in combat either physically or mentally. We know there is a great need there.

I look forward to working with Chuck and Fred and their committee and hope that many more individuals will join in to show our respect and gratitude to these men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.
