How you can help victims of Hurricane Katrina

Here’s how you can help those affected by Hurricane Katrina and examples of successful fund-raising drives.

Relief fund

The Herald, KIRO-TV and The (Tacoma) News Tribune have opened the Katrina Relief Fund at Washington Mutual Bank. All money collected will go to the American Red Cross for disaster relief. Donations may be made at any Washington Mutual Bank branch.

Beanie Babies needed

Several parents associated with College Place Middle School are collecting Beanie Babies stuffed toys for hurricane-displaced children.

Donations of new or gently used Beanie Babies are being accepted through today, Sept. 16 at Waldron Chiropractic, 22933 Highway 99 in Edmonds. Shipping expenses will be paid by a woman’s group of which organizer Marcia Hyde is a member.

Bowling for Katrina

Spin Alley Bowling Center, 1430 Richmond Beach Road, Shoreline, will host a hurricane relief event from noon-9 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18. All proceeds druing that time will be donated to Red Cross relief efforts. Spin Alley is smoke-free. Info: 206-533-2345.

Markets match donations

Town &Country Markets Inc., which owns Central Market stores in Mill Creek and Shoreline, is accepting donations for the Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund in its stores and will match the total donations received, up to $50,000. Donations are being accepted at all checkstands, with or without a purchase, and can be paid for with cash, check, debit or credit cards. The customer’s receipt will indicate the amount of donation for tax purposes. Donations will be accepted through Sunday, Sept. 25.

Taste of New Orleans

The Kiwanis Club of Lynnwood is teaming up with students, teachers and parents of Maplewood K-8 Co-op in Edmonds for the “Taste of New Orleans” Hurricane Disaster Relief Fundraiser. The event is set for 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Maplewood K-8 Co-op (in the Commons), 8500 200th Street SW., Edmonds. Attendees can sample the food that made New Orleans famous, including jambalaya, black beans and rice, French bread, pecan pie and fruit juice. Admission is free. Donations for the Lynnwood Kiwanis Foundation are welcome. All donations will be sent to the Kiwanis International Foundation Disaster Relief Fund, which will be directed to children with the most immediate and critical needs. Southern brunch benefit

Brighton Court Retirement Community of Lynnwood will donate all proceeds from a southern brunch to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. The event is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. Suggested donation is $15 The Brighton Court Retirement Community is located at 6520 196th St. SW. in Lynnwood. For information, call 425-775-4440.

Successful drive at AMHS

Students at Archbishop Murphy High School have donated $4,065 to the relief of Hurricane Katrina victims.

Their effort was led by seniors who spearheaded a school assembly with slides, statistics, prayer and music, which gave the students a powerful and graphic description of peoples’ suffering and loss in the region. Another highlight was the generous collections taken up by the student-body officers at home football games on Sept. 2 and 9. The theology teachers and campus ministry also contributed with special prayer services and collections throughout the week.

Ice cream and coffee

Spotted Cow Ice Cream and Coffee Company of Mill Creek will donate 15 percent of all sales on Saturday, Sept. 17 to help young victims of Hurricane Katrina and orphaned children in Malawi. In addition, the store will match all sales and additional donations dollar-for-dollar. The store has also created a Gulf Coast blend with all proceeds going to hurricane victims. Backpacks for Kids

Local volunteers have teamed with a church in Richardson, Tex., to assemble backpacks for young hurricane survivors.

All backpacks will contain an age-appropriate donated Bible, toys and personal-care items, according to organizers Andy and Libby Hustler. The first shipment will go to a Texas church housing 700 hurricane survivors, they said.

The project needs donations of school and art supplies, card and small board games, small toys, hair accessories, Christian books, nail-care sets, wallets, makeup, water bottles and other items for toddlers through teenagers. Donations are tax deductible.

Volunteers are needed to procure items, fill backpacks and create a Web site. Call 425-327-3802 for more information.

Calvary Fellowship

Calvary Fellowship at 23302 56th Ave. W. in Mountlake Terrace is collecting donations for hurricane victims. For more information, call 425-775-3422.

COPS help cops

The Snohomish County Deputy Sheriffs Association and the reserve deputy organization have established a fund at Bank of America to aid public safety officers affected by the hurricane. Donations can be made to the “COPS Helping Cops” Fund at any Bank of America branch. All money raised will help fire and police officers who need assistance.

At Alderwood

If you’re shopping at the Alderwood mall, look for envelopes to mail donations to the American Red Cross. There will be signs at the guest services desk and there will be Hurricane Katrina relief donation sites will be set up throughout the mall.

Toiletries

Word of Life Church, 4100 200th St. SW, Lynnwood, is accepting donations to purchase toiletry items for victims. Call 425-776-5433.
