Ice cream social at Yost Pool

  • Tuesday, June 9, 2009 9:50pm

Members of the Edmonds community are invited to an ice cream social hosted by a group of Yost Pool supporters, or “Yosties,” on Sunday, June 13.

The ice cream social will take place from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the upper deck of the pool house.

The social is intended to celebrate the opening of the pool and to thank the members of the Edmonds community who rallied to “Save Yost Pool” by donating over $53,500 to the Edmonds Parks Foundation. In March the mayor announced the pool’s closure because of a budget shortfall in expected revenue.

In addition to treats — free ice cream cones, cookies and bottled water, all donated by QFC Westgate — the parks department is offering a special $2 (reduced fee) swim for two sessions, from 12:50 to 2 p.m. and from 2:10 to 3:20 p.m.

To encourage families and individuals to sign up for punch cards and season passes, new enrollees will be able to enter their names in a free drawing for gifts and certificates donated by a number of Edmonds merchants. Families that have already purchased passes and punch cards will also have their names entered in the drawing.

Free campsites for foster families

Foster children and their caregivers can enjoy big savings while camping in Washington state parks, because of a program established by the Legislature last year

Campsite fees are waived for foster parents and relative caregivers with a foster child currently in their care. Camping at a first-come, first-served park has no charge, and campers reserving sites in reservation parks pay only the $8.50 reservation fee.

Advance reservations for camping are recommended. Qualifying families also may use watercraft launches and pump-outs for free during their camping stay in a park.

To be eligible for the passes, licensed foster parents must provide foster parent identification or a foster home license in addition to a photo ID such as a driver’s license when registering in any state park. To make the telephone reservation, participants tell the operator they are a caretaker in the program and then show the appropriate ID upon arrival at the park.

Relative caregivers must provide a relative caregiver identification card and a driver’s license when registering at a state park. To request identification cards, relative caregivers can contact Dinah Martin: madi300@dshs.wa.gov, 360-902-0740 at the Children’s Administration.

For information visit www.parks.wa.gov or call the State Parks Information Center, 360-902-8844, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. Online reservations are available to free campsite program participants at www.parks.wa.gov, or telephone reservations can be made by calling 1-888-888-CAMPOUT (or 1-888-226-7688), between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily.

Police promote new sergeant

During a City Council meeting on June 2, the Edmonds Police Department announced the promotion of Col. Bob Barker to the rank of Sergeant.

Sgt. Barker was sworn in by police Chief Al Compaan in the presence of Mayor Gary Haakenson, the Edmonds City Council, citizens and his family.

Prior to being hired by the city, Sgt. Barker served seven years in the military as a Navy CeeBee (Construction Battalion).

Since being hired by the Edmonds Police Department in March 1986, Sgt. Barker has worked as a patrol officer, K-9 officer, corporal, detective, DARE officer and shift supervisor.

In addition to his work with the police department, Sgt. Barker has participated in American Cancer Society Relay for Life and facilitated at Camp Goodtimes youth camp on Vashon Island. In June 2002 and 2003, he spent seven days on the roof of Top Foods to raise money for Special Olympics.

In 2002, he was named Edmonds Police Officer of the Year, and was also the City of Edmonds’ Employee of the Year for 2002. In 2003, he was named DARE Officer of the Year for Washington State.

Sgt. Barker has received six letters of commendation, as well as many letters of thanks from citizens for the good deeds he has done over the years.

In March of this year, he participated in an all day Civil Service assessment center test for the position of sergeant.
