Larry Dickerson has been appointed to serve as interim police chief for the Mountlake Terrace Police Department, replacing Chief Scott Smith, who retired from the department Dec. 31.

Smith accepted a position with the Tulalip Tribal Police.

Dickerson served with the city of Lacey Police Department for more than 35 years, including time as chief between 2002 and his retirement in 2005. While chief at Lacey, Dickerson managed 48 commissioned officers, 20 reserve officers, 25 senior patrol members, an explorer post and a $6.3 million budget.

Dickerson is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, as well as several leadership and management classes. In addition to his professional credentials, Dickerson worked for 24 years with the Thurston County Youth Football program, helped with fundraisers for the YMCA and is past president of a Kiwanis Club.

Since his retirement from Lacey, Dickerson has served as interim police chief for the cities of Battle Ground, Tenino and Union Gap.

Dickerson will serve as interim police chief through a contract with the Prothman Agency while Mountlake Terrace recruits for a new police chief. The recruitment is expected to take up to six months.

He started work Jan. 7.
