Track and field athletes across the state will compete in a slew of big invitationals this weekend, a prime opportunity to showcase their talents against the best.

Shorecrest and Lynnwood will be at the granddaddy of them all the Pasco Invite, Saturday, April 19, which is held at Edgar Brown Stadium, the site of the 3A and 4A state meets. The Pasco Invite is more competitive than the state meets since it features about 1,400 athletes from nearly 100 high schools from all classifications from Washington and Oregon.

The Shorecrest boys feature senior Marek Domanski who broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 162 feet, 7 inches at Lake Stevens last Saturday. The previous record holder Josh Vail, whose mark of 154-6 was broken, is a throws coach at Lake Stevens and watched Domanski set the new record, Shorecrest coach Brandon Christensen said. Domanski is ranked second in Class 3A.

Senior Roy McElmurry cleared 14 feet at Lake Stevens and has a season-best of 14-3 which ranks him fourth in 3A going into Pasco. Sophomore Joe McConnaughy will run the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

On the girls side qualifiers include sophomore Alexis Ramos is in the 100, anchors the 400 relay and leads off in the 1,600 relay. Junior Erin Springer will compete in the 400 and 1,600 relay along with senior Danielle Oliver, sophomore Ashley Desharnais. Senior Jocelyn Riordan will throw the javelin and shot put while senior Kelsey Paden is entered in the discus. Freshman Elisa Ahearn is entered in the triple jump and freshman Emily Corona is entered in the long jump. Sophomore Nicole Wanamaker is entered in the 100 hurdles.

Lynnwood will send Dylan Burnett the leading javelin thrower in 3A with a mark of 187-2 at the Davis Invitational in Yakima last weekend. Burnett is ranked third overall in the state.

Alex Williams, a 110-meter high hurdler, enters the Invite with a time of 15.8 seconds which ranks in the top 15 of entrants, Lynnwood coach Duane Lewis said.

Shorewood and Edmonds-Woodway are headed to Snohomish for the Eason Invitational.

Edmonds-Woodway’s Arizona State-bound Yon Yilma will likely run the 1,600 facing off against Sehome’s Mason McHenry, the state 2A leader in the 800 and 1,600. Yilma’s season best of 4:19.05 in the 1,600 is the third best time in all classifications.

Senior Calvin Grover is featured in the 800, senior Antoinne Wafer is featured in the sprints while freshman phenom Alec Fellows is entered in the triple jump and high jump. Fellows is ranked ninth in the high jump in 4A with a mark of 6-2.25.

On the girls side, the Warriors entrants include sprinter Katie Tougas, 400-meter runner Amia Nash, long jumper Brittatny Peterson and high jumper Shannon Sims.

Shorewood features sophomore Kane Thomas who qualified in the 400 and 800, Junior Chip Jackson who ran a solid time of 9:47.45 in the Solberg Invite last weekend and James Danner in the javelin.

On the girls side, high jumper Caroline Soules cleared 5-3 at Solberg, and is working on improving her speed and explosiveness.

Freshman Lisas Santroch is entered in the 800 and the 800 relay includes freshman Tessa Berkeley, sophomore Jamie Carroll, sophomore Ashleigh Marchant and senior Amanda Clark.

King’s hosts its own King’s Invite and the competition is expected to be tough. Sprinter Josh Fuller, the defending 1A champ in the 100, 200 and 400 will be tested by a strong field of sprinters. The 110-hurdles race on the boys side features the top two athletes from Idaho and a classification leader from Oregon.

Senior Victor Swanson has the top mark among entrants in the discus and triple jumper Tony Yakovich has the top mark as well.

Freshman Curtis Clauson comes into the javelin with a mark of 174 feet, fourth best in 1A this year. He’s also ranked eighth

Look for King’s Olivia Thomas to have some good competition in her events, including the 800.

Bracht second at Dolan

Shorecrest senior Jens Bracht shot a three-under par 69 at the Tom Dolan Memorial Golf Tournament at Everett Golf and Country Club, but it wasn’t enough to beat Kamiak’s Reid Martin. Martin notched five birdies on the back nine and scored a 65 to win by four strokes.

Shorewood’s Carr headed to Skagit

Shorewood senior midfielder Colton Carr has signed a letter of intent to play men’s soccer at Skagit Valley College next year.
