The band program at Jackson High School, under the direction of Lesley Moffat, completed the school year with a long list of achievements accumulated by ensembles and individual performers.
In early May, the bands traveled to the Heritage Music Festival in New York to learn and compete with schools from around the United States and Canada.
Each of the band groups received awards and trophies, including: a gold rating/first place for the Concert Band (freshmen), a gold rating/second place for the Symphonic Band (upperclassmen), a gold rating/first place and the Adjudicator’s Award for high scoring for the Wind Ensemble (the top band) and a gold rating, the Adjudicator’s Award for high scoring and the Instrumental Sweepstakes for highest score at the festival to the Jazz Ensemble.
In addition, the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble received invitations to attend the Festival of Gold in Boston in 2005, which includes working sessions with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Individual students auditioned and were accepted to perform with competitive groups throughout the year and into next year as well.
Corey Hall was selected as the lead alto saxophonist for the All State Jazz Ensemble and Ainsley Leavitt and Nicole Gessel performed with the All State Honor Band.Rayna Davis will participate in the summer of 2005 with the Cascade Youth Symphony Tour — Vienna and Beyond.
Two students, Janelle Arenz and Kim Frederickson, auditioned and were selected to play with the National Festival Orchestra, a select group of high school and college students in New York City. They will stay in New York for four days, and the trip will culminate in a concert at Carnegie Hall.
