The Jackson boys basketball team has started out the new year with three straight victories.
Brett Kingma drilled a 15-foot jump shot as time expired to lift the Timberwolves to a 55-53 victory over Mountlake Terrace on Jan. 2 and then the Wolfpack defense clamped down on Kamiak en route to a 58-39 victory on Jan. 4.
With a 95-93 double overtime victory over Shorewood on Jan. 8, the surprising Timberwolves improved to 5-2 in the Western Conference South Division and 6-5 overall. The Wolfpack, which did not return any starters from last season’s district playoff team, currently is in third place among the 4A teams in the league.
Kingma finished with a team-high 12 points against the Hawks, but the freshman guard has ample support.
Solid free-throwing shooting, coupled with stellar defense, enabled Jackson to upend Kamiak. The Timberwolves knocked down 27 of 34 free throws.
“We did a nice job of getting the ball to the basket. Then, we took advantage of what we got at the line,” said Jackson head coach Steve Johnson. “They fell behind, so they had to be more aggressive, and we were intelligent enough to keep attacking.”
Kingma was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line and sophomore Ryan Todd was 9-for-10. Kingma finished with 14 points, while Todd had 11.
The Jackson defense limited Kamiak to single digits in the first three quarters, while building a 37-20 advantage.
Junior David Sullivan scored the game winner against the Thunderbirds with a putback of his own missed shot.
