The Jackson girls golf team raised more than $1,300 during a benefit golf tournament July 9 at the Mill Creek Country Club.

The tournament was the brainchild of senior captain Carly Clement, who put the tournament together for her senior culminating exhibition project at Jackson. The tournament was supported by several local businesses with major funding coming from ABS Business Data. Other donors were Central Market, Columbia Mortgage, Mill Creek Psychological Services, Pacific Direct, Starbucks and Safeway. It was staffed by Clement, coach Jeannie Thompson and golf team members Samantha Frank, Mina Hong, Rachael Hawkes, and Alexis Stanfield.

Mill Creek Country Club head pro Greg Whisman provided silent auction items and catering coordinator Tracy Hinchcliffe gave consultation throughout the project. The tournament featured long drive, closest to pin, and putting contests, in addition to team prizes and a silent auction.

Twenty-four players came out for the first-ever benefit for the girls golf team. Team honors were won by Jeff Jacobsen, Bill Moore, Jeff Mackey, Joe Myers and Robert Gorman who scored a combined 10-under-par 62 in the 18 hole scramble-format tournament.

Thompson indicated the money would be used to pay for an end of year banquet for the team and to cover part of the green fees for next year. The funds also could help pay for the team’s lodging expenses at the district qualifying tournament in Oak Harbor in mid-May.

“We’re hoping one of next year’s seniors will want to do a tournament for their senior project and we may look into a joint tournament with the boys’ golf team,” Thompson said.

Anyone who was not able to attend the tournament, but would still like to support the Jackson girls golf program, may send contributions to: JHS Girls Golf Team, Henry M Jackson High School, 1508 136th St SE, Mill Creek, WA 98012.
