Jackson’s Mike Reading battled his way back into contention after dropping a tough three-set match to open last week’s Class 4A state singles tournament at University High School in Spokane.
Reading dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 match to Auburn-Riverside’s Kyle Schrader in the first round.
The Jackson junior then won three of four matches in the consolation bracket to finish sixth overall in the two-day tournament that wrapped up May 29.
Reading outlasted Wenatchee’s Andrew Knox 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, defeated Bremerton’s Joe Trudel 6-3, 6-1 and then dismissed Eastlake’s Ted Hickey 6-2, 6-2.
In his final match of the tournament, Reading met a familiar face — Schrader. The Auburn-Riverside junior beat Reading 6-4, 6-4 to finish fourth overall.
Jackson senior Grace Bhak advanced to the 4A girls singles tournament but dropped both of her matches.
