Student vocal and instrumental groups from Shoreline earned outstanding honors at the 2005 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho.
Under the direction of Darla Pumphrey, King’s Junior High School earned Outstanding Festival Choir honors during the Feb. 23 showcase.
The choir was selected as the winning junior high school choir and then chosen as the overall outstanding festival choir.
Wayne Pumphrey directed King’s High School I to the Outstanding A Choir award Feb. 25.
In addition to the group honors, King’s student Siobhan Brugger earned the Junior Alto Soloist award.
Elementary, middle and junior high school students from throughout the western United States and Canada were the focus of the first day of student competitions at the 38th annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. The young musicians performed for a group of adjudicators and top scoring groups played later in the day at the Potlatch Outstanding Young Artists Concert.
The first day of the jazz festival also featured clinics by jazz artists performing at the festival, including Freddy Cole, Monte Alexander, the Four Freshmen, Terell Stafford, Randy Brecker and Chuck Findlay.
The outstanding student soloists, including Brugger, were main-stage performers for the Pepsi International Jazz Concert. The young musicians performed with jazz musicians Kuni Mikami, piano; Christian Fabian, bass and Wally “Gator” Watson, drums.
