JHS Internet Safety Parent Workshop

An Internet Safety Parent Workshop will be at 7 p.m. Jan 29 in the Jackson High School library, with a light dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Parents can minimize the potential risks kids face when they use the Internet. Janet Malkow with the Sheriff’s Department Internet Crimes Against Children Unit will present information on cyberstalking, harassment and online predators.

Upcoming events at Jackson will be a Town Hall Meeting on Teenage Drinking March 25 and a drug information night called “The Anti-Drug” May 20.

The programs are sponsored by the school’s PTSA and administration.

Seminar helps tap into scholarships

Students and their families can learn how to get money for college at a student aid workshop Jan. 27.

Everett Community College is hosting College Goal Sunday, a free program that helps families fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as FAFSA.

Volunteers from the college, the Northwest Education Loan Association and other professionals will be available to help students and their families complete the FAFSA.

The FAFSA form is the first step in obtaining financial help from the government.

Pre-registration is not required, but there is an online sign-up to reserve a time. The event begins at 2 p.m. Jan. 27.

Students and parents are encouraged to attend the event together. Bring recent tax forms, pay stubs, the student’s Social Security number and a driver’s license if they have one. Financial records are not mandatory to attend the workshop.

Brighton School open house

Brighton School will have an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 26 at the school, 6717 212th St. SW in Lynnwood. Brighton is a private school which serves preschool through eighth-grade.

Qwest offers technology grants

Applications will be accepted for Qwest Foundation learning technologies grants until Feb. 4. The foundation is funding a $100,000 technology integration grant program for Washington teachers.

Applicants must generate a detailed classroom project proposal that includes assessments to measure student learning.

The grant program is designed to develop standards-based learning models that use a variety of digital technologies. It also aims to identify instructional practices based on research and current practice that take advantage of today’s digital technologies.

Teachers or teacher teams can send their application until 3 p.m. Feb. 4 to apply for grants of up to $10,000. The application is at www.k12.wa.us/EdTech/.
