The Mountlake Terrace Art Commission presents paper artist Melanie Jorissen through March 31 at the Mountlake Terrace Library.

“Paper on the Edge,” Jorissen’s exhibit, showcases her unique paper art creations. Her 3-dimensional creations with rich textures and life-like detail depict a variety of subjects including birds in flight, animal portraits, and winged horses and unicorns. “I use several art techniques when creating my pieces, including paper quilling, paper sculpture, collage, watercolors, and stamping techniques,” she said.

Jorissen, who grew up in an artistic family, experimented with a variety of arts and crafts techniques over the years. Her love of quilling began 10 years ago when she made her first snowflake by following directions in a magazine. “I cut small strips of paper by hand and used make-shift tools to form the quills for the design,” Jorissen said. “At first I used patterns developed specifically for quilling, then I began improvising by using patterns developed for other materials, and eventually, I developed my own designs and techniques.”

Paper quilling, the core of her process, is an ancient decorative art form used by 13th century European monks who quilled remnants of bibles into elaborate religious images.
