SHORELINE — It’s not how you start, but how you finish.

Kamiak led Shorecrest most of the way in the first two games of a Sept. 28 match at Shorecrest High School, but the Scots fought back to take both games.

After Kamiak dominated the third game, Shorecrest closed out the match in gamefour to preserve a 27-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-19 win.

Kamiak held an 18-10 advantage in game one, but Shorecrest inched back. The Scots tied the score at 22, and then ended the game on a cross court kill by outside hitter Brittney Harrison.

The Knights broke out to a 8-2 lead in game two, but again it didn’t last. After Shorecrest trailed most of the game, it evened the score at 15 and took the lead for good at 19-18 on a tip kill by middle hitter Jamie McDonald.

“We didn’t finish in the first two (games) and we had opportunities to do so,” said Kamiak coach Debra Crawford.

Kamiak rebounded to win game three, but Shorecrest led nearly the whole way in game four.

With the win, and a sweep of Shorewood Oct. 3, Shorecrest started Western Conference South Division play 2-0 and improved to 7-0 overall.

“We competed well and fought hard and gave them some good runs,” Shorecrest coach Dave Morehouse said of the Kamiak game.

Kamiak’s size up front with 6-foot, 3-inch middle blocker Nicole Bozek and 6-foot-1 outside hitter Julia Church posed some problems for the Scots early on. Bozek led Kamiak with 20 kills and 15 blocks while Church added 14 kills and 11 blocks. Shorecrest struggled to get the ball to its middle hitters and Kamiak capitalized.

The match also was characterized by long rallies and hard-earned points.

“Both teams played defense extremely well,” Morehouse said.

Scots’ junior co-captain Anna Herold said Kamiak showed improvement from the first meeting when Shorecrest swept them.

“They wanted it a lot more this time and they definitely hung in there in this match,” Herold said.

Meanwhile, Shorecrest sophomore transfer Kerry Clavadetscher played in her second game of the season, after being granted hardship eligibility. Clavadetscher, who had 10 kills and 21 assists as a setter and opposite side hitter, is “really helping with chemistry,” Herold said.

Herold led the Scots with 11 kills and 21 assists. Gloria Tseng notched six kills and Molly Donahue had 17 digs. Devin Larson contributed 43 assists for Kamiak.

So far, Shorecrest appears to be the class of the Wesco South as the league season kicks into gear.

“It’s going to be a tough road,” Herold said. “We’d like to be the team to beat. We’re all competitive girls.”
