EDMONDS — Justin Glenn’s many happy returns and a gargantuan momentum swing led the Kamiak football team past the Mountlake Terrace Hawks 35-7 Sept. 15 at Edmonds Stadium.
Glenn returned a punt and an interception for touchdowns in the Western Conference South Division contest to help a young Knights team (3-0 in the division and overall) remain perfect.
“I just followed my blockers and took it to the house,” Glenn said of his two touchdowns. He also returned the opening kickoff 55 yards to set up Kamiak’s first TD.
Though Glenn terrorized the Hawks (1-1, 1-2) with returns and 54 yards rushing, the Knights cited a goal-line stand and almost certainly the longest TD drive in school history as the difference in the game.
Trailing 21-7 in the third quarter, the Hawks squandered an opportunity when they came away empty-handed despite a first-and-goal situation at the Kamiak 1.
Stuffs by Kamiak defenders Riley Henricks and JJ Stewart on third and fourth downs, respectively, and a penalty against the Knights left the nose of the ball an eyelash from the goal line.
“When you get a stop like that,” Kamiak coach Dan Mack said, “it gives the team a big lift.”
Facing nearly 100 yards of field, the Knights put together a 10-play drive capped by Jacob Jansen’s 21-yard TD pass to Henricks for a 28-7 lead. Jansen completed 10 of 15 pass attempts for 136 yards against a defense that allowed just six points in each of its first two games.
“(The drive) was big,” said Kamiak running back Bryson Kelly, who contributed nine carries for 57 yards and three receptions for 52. “That changed the momentum big time.”
Following the 99-yard drive and a three-and-out series by Terrace’s offense, Glenn’s 46-yard punt return TD and Dylan Gaddy’s fifth extra point put Kamiak ahead 35-7.
Early on, it appeared Terrace would present the Knights with a stiff challenge.
After Kelly’s 3-yard TD plunge opened the scoring, the Knights started their second drive of the game at the Terrace 40. A sequence of mistakes, however, put the Hawks in prime position. On fourth-and-29, the Knights’ punter put his knee to the ground while fielding the snap to set up Terrace at Kamiak’s 27. Five plays later, Tony Ellersick found David Vodegal for a 10-yard TD completion.
Terrace twice booted the ball out of bounds on the ensuing kickoff, and Kyle Cho returned the Hawks’ third kick attempt to the Terrace 48. On the first play of the second quarter, Kelly capitalized with a 33-yard TD jaunt down the Terrace sideline for a 14-7 Kamiak lead. Just over a minute later, Glenn made a shoestring interception of a Terrace overthrow and returned the ball 19 yards for a 21-7 advantage.
Running backs Casey Finnicum (88 yards) and Billy Lechtenberg (45 yards) led the Hawks’ ground attack.
