Keep open space available to all

I am writing about the proposed construction design for Hamlin Park passed by the Shoreline parks and recreation commission on June 26, 2008.

One of the main reasons I bought my home in this neighborhood was to be near to Hamlin Park. I use the park regularly, and am dismayed to see it move towards privatization. The proposed design sacrifices multi-use open space to establish a Little League complex. This is a misuse of public land at public expense.

I appreciate the efforts of the park designers to address erosion and run-off issues, increase accessibility and the commitment to the use of permeable materials for paved areas. However, the proposed layout of the ball field excludes the rest of the public who have historically had access to this open space.

I would prefer a design that also orients the home plates at the corners of the field and leaves the large central open space for other organized sports and spontaneous activities. This concept was endorsed by the Briarcrest Neighborhood Association at its Monday night meeting. It reflects what we have now, and it works.

It is essential this wonderful open space remain open, to be used by the whole public, not just a select few. I hope we can find a design that keeps all of Hamlin Park a public park.
