Kindergarten registration open

Registration is open for children who will be kindergartners next school year in the Edmonds School District. Parents with a child who turns 5 years old by Aug. 31 can stop by their neighborhood school to sign up their child.

To register, bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate and proof of residency. That could be a utility bill, lease papers or mortgage papers. Daycare addresses are not sufficient for enrollment. Bring names and phone numbers of two emergency contacts and proof of immunizations to date.

Most schools offer half-day and full-day options.

Call the child’s school or Shelley Roehl, the district’s kindergarten contact, at 425-431-7176 for information.

EdCC student headed to Cannes

Edmonds Community College Culinary Arts student Robert Schaudt, 36, of Bellevue will help prepare food for guests attending the Cannes International Film Festival in May as part of the American Pavilion culinary team.

The team, which serves press, filmmakers, stars and others, prepares up to 1,000 meals per day during the festival in France. Schaudt was one of 35 culinary students selected for the program from a pool of 1,200 applicants.

While earning his two-year culinary arts degree, Schaudt works as a chef at O/8 Seafood Grill in Bellevue. After graduation, Schaudt plans to open his own restaurant serving tapas, desserts and wine.

Before coming to the college, Schaudt sold cars. “I was making great money, but it wasn’t my dream,” he said. “My wife encouraged me to go back to school for a career I really loved and I have passion for food and wine.”
