More than 100 cats and dogs will be available to new homes from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., June 28, at King County’s Kent Animal Shelter.

During the eighth annual Pet Adoptathon event, people can get nearly 50 percent off the regular adoption fee.

The adoptathon was started in 1996 to draw attention to the large numbers of companion animals available for adoption at animal shelters.

“Working with the community over the last decade, we’ve done a tremendous job of increasing the number of pets that are successfully adopted to loving families,” said King County Executive Ron Sims.

Cats and dogs available at Adoptathon will come in a variety of sizes and breeds, including puppies and kittens, and all of them can be adopted for about half the regular price – $40 instead of the usual $75. Included in the fee are vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, a King County pet license, education and training materials, a collar and leash for dogs, and a carrier for cats.

Last year, all 140 available dogs and cats were adopted during Adoptathon.

For those who have questions about which pet is right for them, animal behavior experts will be available to provide advice during the adoption process. If an appropriate pet is not available, King County Animal Control will provide rain checks that will be valid through the end of July. The rain checks will guarantee the $40 adoption price for a cat or dog at King County’s Kent or Bellevue (Crossroads) animal shelters.

In addition to adopting pets, residents can also visit informational booths sponsored by a variety of experts on animal behavior, training, grooming, and other related topics.

Pet owners who have not yet licensed their dogs or cats can purchase pet licenses at Adoptathon. Anyone who purchases a new, full-price license during the event will receive a coupon good for a free-microchip implant, to be implanted at a later date at the Kent Animal Shelter. Or, with a new, full-price license, a “buddy license” can be purchased for a second not-yet licensed animal for only $5.

“If you are separated from your pet, an up-to-date King County pet license will help ensure that your animal is returned to you,” said Ben Leifer, manager of King County’s Animal Services and Programs.

Citizens can also have microchips implanted in their pets during Adoptathon. The Seattle Veterinary Association will implant microchips from noon to 3 p.m. for a fee of $22.

Pet owners who would like to get their unaltered pet spayed or neutered can come by King County’s Kent Animal Shelter on Thursday, June 26 or Friday, June 27 for a special pre-Adoptathon spay and neuter event sponsored by Pasado’s Safe Haven. Those wanting the service must show up no later than 7 a.m. and are reminded not to feed their pets after 10 p.m.
